Questions about the Cash for Clunkers Program? Online Calculator Clears Them Up
Cash for Clunkers’ official name is Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). In this program, older cars that have low EPA figures, can be traded in and qualify for government assistance. Sounds great, but how do you know if your car qualifies? What about the resale value of your car? Is it worth more than any government credit?
Now you can know for sure. Visit http://www.kbb.com/cashforclunkers and put in your zip code, a little information about your car, and it will do the calculations for you. I tried it with my 1995 Ford Aerostar van and got the following results:
Combined Fuel Economy: 20 MPG Trade-In Value1: $1,825
1Trade-in Value is what consumers can expect to receive from a dealer for a trade-in vehicle.Your car may not qualify.2
The Cash for Clunkers program hasn’t been finalized yet, but it’s likely this vehicle will NOT meet the plan’s eligibility requirements. Of course, you can still trade it in or sell it for cash.
I gotta tell you, I’m bummed! I’d love to trade in my 7-passenger, extended van, as I’m now a single driver 90% of the time. I’d think I’m exactly who they’re targeting. Our other car, a 1983 truck, doesn’t even qualify and yet it’s driven daily and licensed for all of its 20+ years. Again, I would have thought they’d want it off the road.

Kbb.com provides a simple, interactive Cash for Clunkers Calculator to help consumers determine whether they may be eligible for a credit under the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), the official government name of the Cash for Clunkers program. The calculator helps consumers evaluate vehicles with model years between 1989 and 2009 based on make, model, condition, and mileage. The age of the vehicle, its fuel economy and the fuel efficiency rating of the new car are key factors to determine whether the vehicle qualifies for a ‘Cash for Clunkers’ credit toward the purchase of a new vehicle. The calculator also displays the Kelley Blue Book® Trade-In Value, to help consumers determine whether their vehicle is worth more or less than the possible credit they could receive from the CARS program.
