New Jay Leno Show is Tonight Show Redux

Submitted by Connie on September 15, 2009 – 12:21 amOne Comment

jaylenoDon’t get me wrong;  Jay Leno can be funny. Hubs and I saw him in Vegas in 1987 at a small cabaret show.  Now that I think about it, it may have been Reno.  Anyway, it was a tiny theatre and we got the tickets for free for having lost lots of money – yea Player’s Club.  Hoping to stem our losses for a few hours we decided to accept the tickets and check out this guy named Leno.  It was a good five years before the Tonight Show and we had no idea who he was.
He was so funny that we laughed hysterically throughout the entire show. I was pregnant with my second son at the time and I laughed so hard that my belly was literally hurting.  Jay was dark haired then with just a touch of gray.  When he took over the Tonight Show in 1992 I was excited to see how he would fill Johnny’s  seat – expecting the same outrageous humor we’d seen in 1987.

Sadly, I’ve never liked the Tonight Show, not even when Jay took over. There’s something about the format I’m not fond of.  I don’t watch any of the late night talk shows, even though I’m probably part of their target audience.  I work from home so I’m up at that hour and I’m nearly 50.

I watched Jay’s new show tonight and it just felt stale – it was the same old Tonight Show, just on a new channel and different time. The format is exactly the same and even the band leader, Kevin Eubanks, has come along to the new show.  There wasn’t one new, fresh idea.  Sure, by luck he had Kanye West the night after he dissed Taylor Swift at the VMAs, but again, it’s just not new, unique, fresh, or fun.

To give up 5 nights a week of prime time, NBC must have high hopes for the show. I think it’s just a waste of prime time space.  Sorry Jay, you were funny, but it’s time to go back to your stand up roots.

You can watch full episodes or clips at the Jay Leno Show website. Did you catch the premier?  Curious how others liked it.  It was my first and last night of the Jay Leno Show.

I watched Jay Leno on Monday night and I was not impressed. He seemed nervous or something and it was not the old Jay. Weds. night he finally relaxed and became the Jay from the Tonight Show. I don’t watch the Tonight Show anymore. I Love that Jay is on at 10 pm!
