“V” – Will You Be Watching Tonight?

Submitted by Connie on November 3, 2009 – 5:55 pm2 Comments

vBack in 1983, the year we got married, the original “V” miniseries aired. I remember back then it was a huge event, something along the lines of the famous radio event, War of the Worlds, portraying and invasion of the earth by Extraterrestrials.  TV stations made sure to announce that it was just a TV show.

I remember being fascinated by the show and when in 1984 V: The Final Battle aired, I was right there, loving every moment of the “them vs us” battle. By the time the series started in 1984 I think I lost interest, or maybe it was because we were working on having kids,  but I had never seen the episodes until now.

In anticipation of tonight’s premier of the 2009 TV series, I’ve been watching the old “V” shows for several days now on the SyFy channel. All I’ve got to say is, wow!  We sure had some interesting ideas about hair and clothing styles and the special effects of the time look nothing but campy now.  Still, I’m hoping the new version maintains just a bit of that campyness and stays away from turning “V” into a horror-type sci-fi show.  That’s why the 80’s version worked for me.  It was less about the gore and more about the relationships.  If the new version turns out to be scary/gory rather than suspenseful, I’ll be out in the first episode.

The new version is said to pay homage to the original, but there’ll be new characters and new story lines. One of the leads is an actor, Elizabeth Mitchell, I know from LOST.  She portrayed Juliette and was not one of my favs on LOST, but she may shine here.  She plays an FBI agent, a character not brought forward from the original.  Her bio on the ABC website states, “Erica Evans is a top agent with the FBI’s Counter Terrorist Division. She’s also a single mom doing the best she can raising a troubled teenaged son. After the Visitors arrive, Erica gets caught up in the greatest conspiracy and toughest fight of her life, to save humanity and to keep her son safe.“  Definitely an updated role that shows the differences since the 1980s in our world.

Sadly, I’m coming down with the flu. Hopefully just the regular flu, but we’ve both been exposed to swine flu and hubs is sick as well.  This is day 2 for him, day 1 for me.  I have cooking to do, items to add to the website, and a new show to watch tonight and all I want to do is sleep.  Here’s hoping I don’t miss the premier I’ve been waiting weeks for!
